“Who do you say that I am?” Mt. 16:13-20

August 24     21 OT                    Matt 16:13-20                “Who do you say that I am?”

Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi and he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”

They replied,Gates of the netherworld “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the nether world shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” Then he strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.

Children: Who has helped you learn who Jesus is?

Adults: Who do you say Jesus is? What does that mean to you?

Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time

+ May the pastoral ministry of the Church help believers to grow spiritually so that they can respond to your love ever more fully in their lives.  Jesus, in your mercy, we pray.

+ Lord, peace is the foundation of life:  Grant your world the peace and stability that will enable us to live with each other without fear and anxiety, and with dignity and joy.  Jesus, in your mercy, we pray.

+ Help us to remember as we follow your path in our lives, that your ways are mysterious, inscrutable and unsearchable—and yet rich and full of life and joy—if we but follow and serve in love.  Jesus, in your mercy, we pray.

+ We pray for all those who are victims of violence.  For those we know in our lives who have endured violence, we pray that we will be part of your comfort and healing.  Jesus, in your mercy, we pray.

+ May our parish rededicate itself to going to the outskirts of society and serving the poor.  Jesus, in your mercy, we pray.

+ For all those who are sick especially Fred Kilmer, husband of Crystal; Michael Saeger, brother-in-law of Cristal Kilmer; and for Rena and Danny Sarunich, parents of Danella Anderson.  Also, we pray for those who have died, including Tom Madden.   Jesus, in your mercy, we pray.

+ For the prayers which are written in the Parish Book of Intercessions and those we hold in the silence of our hearts.  Jesus, in your mercy, we pray.

Question of the Week ~ August 17 ~ 20th Sunday OT

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Matt 15:21-28                                                                     The Canaanite woman

At that time, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And behold, a Canaanite woman of that district came and called out, “Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is tormented by a demon.” But Jesus did not say a word in answer to her. Jesus’ disciples came and asked him, “Send her away, for she keeps calling out after us.” He said in reply, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But the woman came and did Jesus homage, saying, “Lord, help me.” He said in reply, “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” She said, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps that fall from the table of their masters.” Then Jesus said to her in reply, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.” And the woman’s daughter was healed from that hour.

Aug. 10, 2014 ~ 19th OT ~ “Why Did You Doubt”

Matt 14:22-33                                         “Why did you doubt?”

After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already aWalk on water few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.”

Children: When have you had to take a risk? What helped you?

The Miracle of the Loaves and Fishes

18th  Sunday in Ordinary Time

Matt 14:13-21

When Jesus heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. The crowds heard of this and followed him on foot from their towns. When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick. When it was evening, the disciples approached him and said, “This is a deserted place and it is already late; dismiss the crowds so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.” But they said to him, “Five loaves and two fish are all we have here.” Then he said, “Bring them here to me,” and he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he said the blessing, broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up the fragments left over—twelve wicker baskets full. Those who ate were about five thousand men, not counting women and children.

Children and Adults: What has God given you that might be shared to help others?
